GLK head to Mexico
Last year I was selected to participate in the county trip to Mexico in August. It has been a challenging, but fun, year of hard work!
It started by meeting 10 girls and 3 leaders, who I had never met before and then fundraising for the trip. Throughout the year we did many fundraising events, including running a disco for the Rainbows and Brownies and selling promises at an auction.
We also had 3 training weekends where we did crafts based on Mexican culture, team building and cooked lots of Mexican food! We were all very excited when we arrived at the airport ready to go, with our suitcases stuffed, hoping it wouldn’t be over the weight limit and our leaders with only one rucksack each!
Following our 11 hour flight, where we enjoyed the English touch of scones and jam, we arrived safely in Mexico: our journey had started and there was going back.
Our first two days were in Mexico City, where we visited the Temple de Mayor, an Aztec remain and then onto the city park where there was a free zoo with a panda and lots of goats and the national history museum with an amazing view over the city.
Our time in Our Cabaña was inspirational, educational and emotional. We had the best time going to the orphanage where we played parachute games with the children and taught them how to make little cute bead men.
We also visited a food bank as part of our charity work where we helped the local community to provide food for those less fortunate.
Whilst staying at Our Cabaña we also went to the silver capital of Mexico, Taxco; hiked up a mountain and visited Cuernavaca. We also took part in a salsa lesson, Mexican fiesta and an international evening where we sang ‘The Lambeth walk’, told people about London and swapped badges.
We also took part in two workshops: #FreeBeingMe and #StopTheViolence where we learnt about these projects and how they are supporting girls all around the world with the help of Girlguiding. We also learnt about WAGGGS and the culture of Mexico through two wide games.
On behalf of all the girls and leaders from GLK Mexico 2014 group, I thank you for all your help and support during our hard work to get to Mexico. We thank you for providing us with the opportunity of this amazing experience which I am sure you would agree was the trip of a life time!!
